Type A / Butt joint

The butt joint version of the piston ring is the standard type. This is most common in combustion engines with compression-, nose- and slotted oil scraper rings.

Euroring butt joint / Type A

When designing a seal, it is important that there is sufficient amount of flexibility in terms of use. We also call this the final clearance or closed gap space (S1). The piston ring will expand/become longer by introducing heat to, for example, an internal combustion engine. The ring-ends come together but must not touch under any circumstances. If this occurs, the ring will ‘set’ itself on the cylinder wall and/or in the groove. The ring will jam and then deform. The result may cause the piston to jam, resulting in a blockage.

Possible applications include;
– Combustion engines
– Turbochargers
– Mechanical tools
– Presses
– Steam engines
– Cars
– Motorcycles
– Aircraft engines

Type B / Angle cut

The angle lock is often used when the piston ring is running over in- and outlet gates used in hydraulic applications.

Euroring angle cut/Type B (left)

Also, the distance that gases or liquids must traverse is longer than in a Butt joint, so the medium experiences more resistance, resulting in a better seal. Often the left and right locks alternate to enhance this effect even more by way of a labyrinth effect. A variant of this type of lock is the radial angled lock.

 Possible applications include;
– Hydraulics
– Steam engines
– Combustion engines
– Gas & Steam turbines
– Recycling industry
– Automotive

Type C / Radial cut

Just like the angled lock, this lock type in piston rings is also marked with a left and right type. For optimum operation, accurate dimensions in the lock clearance are of huge importance.

Radial cut/Type C (Left)

This lock type is used, for example, for compressors in a composite set with multiple piston ring types. This lock is also used in combination with an internal lock to prevent twisting.

Radial cut/Type C (Right)

Used in:
– Compressors
– Steam applications
– Combustion engines

Type D / Step cut

As with the angled lock, the ends are less likely to hang in a coil or control port during linear movements.

Step cut/Type D (sharp corners)

Special step cut piston ring + Spring

Custom step cut piston ring + spring

In the radial direction, these ends must run completely along the radius of the cylinder wall and, thereby ensuring best possible sealing. This is an important technical aspect during production and is additionally checked. The correct lock clearance and lock length is important for proper operation when at operating temperature.

This type of lock is often used in compressors and start air valves in the shipping industry. Euroring produces this type of lock for tensioned piston rings both internally and externally.

Type E / Gastight cut

Due to the geometry of this type of lock, optimum sealing is possible. This type of lock is retained under varying pressure levels and extreme temperature changes. Due to the design of the lock, one specific side must always be mounted to the pressure/compression side. If this is not done, a large part of the operation is lost. This side of the piston ring is therefore marked, for example, “TOP”.

Gastight cut/Type E (round type)

This type of lock is often used in combination with highly alloyed materials such as Stellite and Inconel. The sealing effect as well as temperature, wear and corrosion resistance play a vital role here. Due to these factors, high accuracy in production and (final) inspection is of huge importance. Euroring designs and produces this type of lock based on your technical specifications.

Gastight cut piston rings

You can choose between a straight and semi-circular gastight lock. The lock lengths follow the radius of the bore size to achieve an optimal effect. This lock continues to work even after some wear and tear.

Gastight cut/Type E (straight type)

 Applied in a.o;
– Control and directional valves
– Off Shore
– Safety valves
– Gas & steam turbines
– Hydraulics

DIN ISO name= SW / Walzenstoß
DIN 34109

Type F / Lock step cut

This lock type is mainly used to prevent the piston ring from springing open during installation. The preload creates too large a diameter that makes mounting difficult with recessed holes, blind installation and passing through ring grooves. This lock is therefore only used for outside tensioning piston rings.

Lock step cut / Type F

This lock can, if needed, be rotated by 90º to a radial configuration. We find this type of ring in turbochargers and gearboxes, which in turn can be found in:

Applications;
– Automotive
– Shipping
– Energy sector
– Race and high performance
– Heavy construction and construction equipment
– Forest and horticultural machines and equipment

Euroring produces according to international standards DIN 34109 and SAE J1236 and can also produce geometry and materials tailored specifically to your wishes and specifications.

ISO designation SH/ Verhakter Stoß
A related standard is DIN 34109

Materials include
– GG and GGG cast iron alloy for piston rings
– Various Bronze alloys
– High temperature steels and alloys

Type G / Inside notch cut

This type of lock is used just as the side lock, to prevent rotation of the piston ring in the groove. If this type of lock is not used, the lock ends of the piston ring can move to a flushing port due to a possible rotation. The preload of the piston ring allows the ends of the lock to protrude outwardly or within the flushing port.

Inside notch piston ring

This situation is very undesirable and can cause all kinds of problems such as a jammed piston. The ring is then jammed by this inside lock. The lock can be produced with either a radius or with bevelled edges depending on your specifications.

ISO 6621-4 designation = NH1 to NH3

Possible applications:
– Combustion engines (two-stroke)
– Gas engines
– Hydraulics
– Steam applications

Type H / Side notch cut

This type of lock is used, just like the inner lock, to lock the rotation of the piston ring in the groove.

Side notch/Type H

Access from the side makes the pin that falls into the opening of the side lock easier to insert than the inner lock. We often encounter this type in two-stroke and old diesel engines. Sometimes it is necessary for the piston ring not to rotate with a rotating application. We use this type of lock to achieve this.

Type I / Dual gastight cut

The design of this gastight piston ring is aimed at providing maximum efficiency in conditions that involve, for example, flushing or steering ports needing to be bypassed. The geometry is aimed at ensuring dual action and thus sealing optimally in both axial directions.

Dual gastight cut / Type I

There are several versions of this type of lock, but all have the same dual sealing effect. Given the geometry of this lock, a precise production process is extremely important to achieve a properly functioning end product.

This type of lock can be used in:
– Hydraulic systems
– Safety & control valves
– Gas turbines
– Shock absorbers
– Compressors

Type J / Radial step cut

This type of lock is similar to the step/lock step cut in terms of its design, except rotated by 90 degrees. This type of lock can be used in combination with an inner lock against anti-rotation of the piston ring.

For example:
– Automotive
– Aerospace
– Hydraulics
